Feedback from the workshop

Brought in my father's old Seiko — something had been off with the movement for years and I'd never trusted anyone to look at it. Kanok assessed it carefully and explained exactly what they found before doing anything. The watch came back running within about 8 seconds a day. I was genuinely relieved.

I travel frequently and dropped in on a recommendation after my quartz stopped working. Battery done in two days, gasket checked, all clear. The turnaround was exactly what they said. My only wish is that the workshop had slightly longer weekday hours — I had to rearrange slightly to collect. Minor point.

The Heritage Restoration Programme was more thorough than I expected. I sent photographs of my grandmother's watch before travelling to Chiang Mai, and Pornpan had already noted the specific concerns I'd raised. When I met with the watchmaker, he showed me the movement condition before closing the case. The photos they sent during the process were a lovely touch — I hadn't expected that.

I posted my watch from Bangkok after reading about the Heritage Restoration. Pornpan emailed me at each stage and they consulted me on the bracelet finishing before touching it. I asked them to leave the slight patina on the case and they respected that entirely. When it arrived back the timing result was included — running 4 seconds fast, which for a movement of that age is quite good.

Brought two watches — one quartz and one automatic. Both handled well. They told me the automatic had a worn mainspring that would need attention in a future service, but wasn't urgent. That kind of honest, forward-looking advice is not what I expected. I'll be back when the time comes.

The watchmaker took time to explain what he was seeing in the movement rather than just quoting a price. He also told me what wasn't needed — which I appreciated. Not every workshop is honest about the limits of necessary work.

In More Detail

Three watches, three different stories

Case Study — Heritage Restoration

A 1968 dress watch, returned to wearing condition

Challenge

A client brought in a 1968 Swiss dress watch that had belonged to his late father. The movement was seized — it had not run in over fifteen years. The crown was difficult to operate and one of the indices had shifted slightly. The client was emotionally attached to the watch but unsure whether restoration was realistic.

What we did

We disassembled the movement completely, identified two worn jewels and a damaged mainspring. These were sourced and replaced. The index was carefully repositioned. We consulted the client before any case work — he asked for a minimal clean only, no polishing, and we honoured that. Photographs were taken at each stage.

Outcome

The movement was running within 6 seconds per day after regulation. The watch is now worn regularly for the first time in decades. Timeline: six weeks. The client received the stage photos alongside the watch.

"I didn't think I'd ever see it running again. Seeing the photos of the movement being cleaned was something I hadn't expected."

Case Study — Automatic Regulation

A daily-wear mechanical losing two minutes a day

Challenge

A client had purchased a pre-owned automatic watch and found it running noticeably fast — around two minutes per day. The previous owner had mentioned it might need a service. The watch was otherwise in good cosmetic condition and the client wanted it regulated without unnecessary work.

What we did

After assessment, we opened the movement and found moderate wear on the pallet fork and a partially dried lubricant in the keyless works. These areas were cleaned and re-lubricated. Multi-position regulation followed on the timing machine. The gaskets were also renewed as part of the service.

Outcome

Post-regulation rate: +4 seconds per day across positions. The client was happy with the improvement and the transparency of the service notes. Timeline: seventeen days.

"Getting the timing sheet with the before and after numbers was reassuring. I could see exactly what changed."

Case Study — Quartz Service

A travel watch that had simply stopped

Challenge

A regular Chiang Mai visitor arrived at the workshop on a Tuesday morning. His quartz travel watch had stopped overnight. He had a flight on Thursday and wanted to know if it was fixable quickly or whether he should buy a replacement.

What we did

Battery replacement and circuit inspection. The original battery had fully discharged after approximately three years of use. One contact point needed cleaning. No seal damage was found; water resistance was confirmed. The watch was ready the same afternoon.

Outcome

Running normally. The client collected it on Wednesday. He didn't need to buy a replacement. Timeline: same-day service.

"Saved me the cost and hassle of buying something I didn't need. Straightforward, fast, and fairly priced."
